After a violent storm, the twins Viola and Sebastian are shipwrecked on the coast of Illyria in two different spots. Disguised as a man, Viola enters the service of the Duke Orsino with whom she falls madly in love; she cannot tell him, however, for fear of revealing her identity. Orsino then asks her to deliver a message to the Duchess Olivia, his neighbour.
Disaster strikes as Olivia, misled by Viola’s manly appearance, instantly falls for her boyish charms. Things get even more complicated until the arrival of Sebastian, rescued from the sea, who settles the whole dispute. All ends well: Olivia plans to marry Sebastian, Orsino, as for him, loves Viola…
